. . . Let’s See

Air Mattresses can offer the ultimate camping sleeping experience, in a sort of “roughing it in comfort” kind of way. They do offer the best nights sleep but to be honest, you’re unlikely to find many hikers or backpackers who are willing to lug around the extra bulk and weight of an air mattress in their backpacks, the means would simply not justify the end for many overnight back packing enthusiasts.

Air Mattress Info

Air Mattresses are very comfortable and a whole lot thicker than your average foam pad. It’s really the nearest thing you can get to your “real bed” (the one you dream about around 3.30 every morning when you’re out on your latest hiking and camping adventure), they’re often the same size as a real bed and can be fitted with the same sheets as you would have on your real bed. Having said that, who on earth can carry all that lot . . . it would really only be suitable for those epic travelers and explorers from a century or so ago who had an army of servants to carry along their four poster bed,  best china tea service and gramophones, and there aren’t a lot of those about these days, not backpacking anyway.

How’s that for a campsite?

Okay, to recap:

    • Air Mattresses are comfortable
    • Air Mattresses are bulky
    • Air Mattresses are heavy
    • Air Mattresses are therefore not perfect for hiking and backpacking . . . .
    • Air Mattresses are, however, perfect for sticking in the back of the car, driving to the campsite, blowing up and  sleeping on in absolute luxury and comfort for a few days “stay put” camping instead of back packing or hiking
    • Air Mattresses don’t have insulation, so are really only suitable for camping in mild conditions
