. . . . Delicious Dinners In a Bag

What do you dream of at the end of a long days hiking? Let me guess, the smell of something cooking, something hot and delicious to really make your mouth water and give you that lovely warm, full up feeling after such a strenuous day. Well, not many of us have the luxury of a fully qualified chef waiting for us at base camp after a hike, with a pot roast cooking over the camp-fire followed by Grannys Apple Pie (with cinnamon) and ice-cream . . . in fact in all my years as a hiker I don’t think I’ve ever met anybody who has that . . . so what’s the next best thing?

Back packers and hikers have to transport their food along with them in their backpacks, which makes it a bit difficult to carry a side of beef, a couple of pounds of potatoes and a freezer pack filled with ice-cream, which is why hiking freeze-dried food is so fantastic. It hasn’t quite got to the Willy Wonka chewing gum stage, but it’s not far off . . . .

Hmmm, she should have stopped chewing at the roast beef stage . . . the blueberry pie was certainly a step too far, anyway, fortunately the hiking freeze-dried food available these days won’t do that to you or your hiking buddies (fingers crossed).

Freeze-Dried Food – A Perfect End To a Perfect Days Hiking

Hiking freeze-dried food is just so convenient, I mean, a small pouch of something which resembles hamster food (or similar) can be magically transformed into Shepherds Pie, Chili con Carne or Chicken & Dumplings with just a little hot water and a couple of minutes patience. They’re small, they’re lightweight, they keep for ages (in case you don’t get around to eating them all on your trip), they’re the convenient hiking food. Let’s take a look at the menu a little more closely shall we (in case you haven’t noticed, food is one of my favorite topics . . . after drink). Hmmm, what to take, what to take:

    • Hikers breakfast foods – how about precooked bacon with eggs; granola with milk and bananas; scrambled eggs with ham and green peppers (NOT green eggs and ham, I do not like them Sam I am); Spinach cheese omelet or pancakes with spice and apples. That’s me sorted out for a few days, how about you?

Fanstastic . . . my absolute very favorite story from Dr Seuss, I mean, “The Cat in the Hat” is okay but you really can’t beat “Green Eggs & Ham”. Right, what’s for dinner?

    • Hikers Freeze-Dried Dinner foods – on the menu for this hike we have Macaroni Cheese (for two, or one very hungry hiker); Stroganoff with Beef and Wild Mushrooms; Fettuccini Alfredo with Chicken; Beef Stew; Turkey with Mashed Potatoes . . . hold on a minute, sounds more like the menu from some fancy restaurant . . . this is better stuff than we have at home!

Okay, we get the idea, you like it, but why didn’t you show us how to prepare it ???

He kind of said all the right things . . . but not necessarily with enough conviction for my liking. Of course, things do taste better when you’re in the great outdoors, tired after a good hike and very very hungry. Now, what about dessert?

    • Hikers Freeze Dried Desserts – how does the idea of apple cobbler grab you, or raspberry crumble; Mint chocolate chip ice cream or cheesecake. Yes, they all work for me pretty much! Any banana cream pie, that’s my favorite . . . yes, that’s been freeze dried too for your hiking trip.

He’s certainly got the job well organized hasn’t he? He’s obviously done this sort of thing before . . .
