Long underwear tops for backpacking and hiking are available in a variety of different weights. That doesn’t mean the weight of the hiker, fortunately, the thoughts of a 240 lb hiker in some skin tight long underwear is not something which we really want to dwell upon. At least they are underwear, designed to be worn under the outerwear . . .  Anyway, long underwear tops for backpacking and hiking are available in lightweight or midweight . . . I wonder if there’s any call for heavyweight underwear?

Choosing Long Underwear Tops for Hiking, Backpacking or Other Back Country Adventures

  • All underwear has to be nice and soft against your skin, whether you’re a newborn babe or a hairy ass hiker! Soft fabric which won’t irritate the skin . . . it’s useful if your long hiking underwear can also resist odors!
  • Temperature regulation is one important feature of long hiking underwear. Any fabric which can wick away moisture as well as having good breathability is a real bonus.
  • Flat sewn seams can help to avoid chaffing . . . think about your shoulders in particular. If you can find a long undewear top with raglan sleeves it will help to stop your backpack from rubbing on your shoulders and causing irritation.
  • Quick-drying is another important feature of all hiking gear, not just underwear. Now we hope that it won’t happen too often, but if you do get soaked to the skin whilst out backpacking you’ll be glad that you have quick drying underwear.
  • Versatility amongst long underwear is also quite common in the world of hiking, backpacking, ski-ing, trail running and any other outdoor activities. Some mediumweight long underwear tops don’t have to be hidden beneath countless other layers of hiking gear . . . they can perform quite well alone.

Is it all becoming clear yet?
