Camping & Trail Socks
The Unsung Hero of Camping Comfort
People often under-estimate the sheer importance of hiking socks . . . well, socks of all kinds actually. I mean . . . socks . . . where would we be without them. There are lots of specialist socks available in the market place today, socks which are designed to do much more than to provide a nice cheap gift for the man in your lifes birthday. Hiking socks, trail socks, running socks, waterproof socks, walking socks, musical socks . . . odd socks. I used to believe that my washing machine had a “thing” for socks, no matter how carefully I counted them in, in pairs, they always seemed to come out odd. I now realize that the washing machine has a “thing” going on with that largely undiscovered territory “under the bed” . . . which is where all of the odd socks seem to reappear. There are some very strange goings on in our house indeed.
Hiking & trail socks are, however, far too high in the sock hierarchy to get involved in such trivial matters. Just like many other members of your hiking wardrobe, hiking socks are designed to;
- insulate your feet and keep them warm whilst you’re hiking.
- Prevent your hiking boots from rubbing and causing painful blisters.
- Provide cushioning comfort for your feet whilst hiking.
- Fit snugly and stay up (very important for both comfort and warmth).
- Help to keep feet dry using moisture-wicking properties.
Like she says, it’s very important to take of your feet whilst hiking, ‘cos once your feet go you are in real trouble!
