For High Energy Campers

That’s not to say that medium or low energy hikers won’t benefit from a softshell hiking jacket too, but many “high energy” hikers do prefer them to the traditional outerwear. (I can hear the conversations now . . . . am I a high energy hiker, no, you’re definitely low energy . . . no I’m not, well, would you say medium energy then . . . occasionally, just after you’ve munched on a granola bar).

Soft Shell Jackets for Hiking

    • Traditional Soft Shell Hiking Jackets – are water-resistant, made from tightly woven fabric which is very stretchy with good breathability. They’re great for high energy activities (there I go again) like backpacking (not how my neighbor does it . . . you could not call her a high energy backpacker at all), climbing, trail running, ski-ing . . . . those sorts of activities which need a good degree of breathability (because you get all hot and sweaty inside) and plenty of flexibility. These types of traditional soft shell hiking jackets are fine for keeping you dry in a quick downpour but if the heavens really open for a prolonged period of time they will eventually become soaked and you will begin to feel wet . . . even on the inside.
    • Soft Shell Hiking Jackets with added WP/BR Membrane – these new hiking jacket fabrics offer more stretch and water proofing ability than the traditional soft shell hiking jackets, but they do lose out a bit on the breathability factor. If you regularly get active hiking, climbing, ski-ing, trail running etc in wetter environments then this would be great for you, but once the skies clear and the sun comes out again (the sun’ll come out . . . tomorrow) then you might wish for a little more breathability.

Soft Shell Jackets for Hiking – Hints ‘n Tips

  • You might be wise (then again you might not . . . ) not to rely solely on a soft shell hiking jacket, especially if you are hiking in foul weather. Many hikers who do love their soft shell jackets also carry an extra hard shell for when they get caught in a real downpour with strong winds. They also add that little extra warmth.
  • Does your soft shell hiking jacket have a hood? It’s no good presuming that there’ll be one tucked away neatly in the collar for emergencies . . . many of them don’t have hoods, so check out your collar, and if not then make sure you’ve got a waterproof hat with you.
  • If the heavens really open whilst you’re hiking in your soft shell jacket, try not to let it get a good soaking. Pop your hard shell over the top as soon as you can, using your soft shell jacket as a warming under layer to keep you extra cozy on your hike.

Remember, the perfect rainwear does not exist, so when you’re choosing a new jacket for your hiking trips just bear in mind what matters most to you;

    • breathability – are you a high energy hiker . . . be honest!
    • waterproofness – is this your top priority?
    • warmth – do you cease to function if you get a bit chilly?
    • weight – are you an ultralight backpacker or will gladly carry a few extra ounces for a little extra comfort?
    • durability – are you the rugged type?
    • flexibility – is this an important consideration for your overall comfort whilst hiking?
    • cost – I know it’s boring, but we all have our budgets.
    • looks – is it important for you to look stylish? Do you like a snug fit?
    • versatility – would you like to wear your hiking jacket even when you’re not hiking and really get your moneys worth?

Shame it won’t make you look any younger, but if they do design a softshell hiking jacket which does make you look younger be sure to let us know . . . quickly!
